Many of us see the holiday period as the worst time ever for our money. I know it is for me! So now if you’re anything like me, you’re probably thinking how to make money in the new year… or maybe make even more money in the new year!
At Christmas, we feel the need to gift our family, especially our kids. In the New Year, we spend a lot with the preparation of big meals and parties.
Typically, we’re not wrong. Money flies like the wind when the holidays arrive, and then we start the following year without a single penny in our pockets.
Well, now it’s time to break the circle.
What if I told you that you can actually MAKE money in the holidays? I bet you haven’t even thought of this possibility, but there are many ways to make money in the New Year.
Think that when you spend that amount of money, you are handing it to someone. In this New Year, you’ll be the one receiving the cash if you follow some of these 9 tips.
1. Sell unwanted gifts for money
Gift giving is the most common practice in the Christmas and New Year’s period. You’ll normally get a few presents you love, maybe from your partner and best friend.
But from my own experience, I know that we ALWAYS get unwanted gifts. For example, a friend gives you a colourful necklace, but your style is soberer. You’ll probably use that necklace for a couple of days, and then you’ll leave it aside.
A better alternative than waste is to sell the gift to another person that might want it. This way, you will also make some money.
You can also prevent to get unwanted gifts rather than sell them. How? Let me tell you.
If someone asks you what do you want or if you know that someone will give you something, you can always say “I prefer to get money as a gift”, or “I currently need money, and I would be thrilled if you gave the gift’s worth in money“.
Believe me, people will understand, and they will love to give you something you truly want.
2. Rent apartment out for extra income
Airbnb is a wonderful way to earn money.
If you do it right, you can live off that money comfortably. Without a boss. Only by taking care of your own house or apartment.
It’s something you can do throughout the year, renting just one bedroom for tourists.
However, the New Year is an excellent opportunity for those who wish to enter the Airbnb business: it’s a period in which people are travelling a lot, it’s a period that you can stay with your parents’ or in your partner’s parents’ house.
During a few days, you can rent out your entire house, which will likely get you more money.
If you live in a tourist destination, you’ll probably make plenty of money in the New Year. People will be looking for cosy places to sleep in while they are partying in your city.
3. Help at a party to get paid money
Parties are everywhere during the New Year and Christmas period.
If you know someone who is throwing a big party, you can always tell them that you’re interested in helping them with the organisation, serving, cleaning, or whatever a party may require.
If something you do can be useful at a party or party organisation, you can use your skills. Examples are creating invitations in editing programs, music edit and remix, video edit, bartending, cooking, etc.
Even if you don’t know a person directly, you can spread the word about your services in groups and social media.
I’m sure at least one person will pay you to help them organise their party.
4. Temporary work and overtime
If you and your family are not that into the end-of-the-year celebrations, what about taking overtime at your own job or some temporary work offered only during this period?
It’s actually a fantastic way to make money in the New Year since companies usually pay more for those who are willing to work during the holidays.
If you are looking for opportunities, websites like Indeed share job offers of temporary work in the New Year’s eve. Check here.
5. Flip stuff online to make money
After Christmas and before New Year are great opportunities to buy things on sale and sell them later with a profit.
We all know that prices go way down after the Christmas period. People who have money to invest can see this as an opportunity to buy things cheap and resell them later for a slightly higher price on Amazon, eBay, or even Facebook groups.
Flipping stuff online may seem like a silly gig, but I know many people who found a product they could sell so well they turned into a business.
6. Wrap presents to make money
This way to make money is usually more lucrative before Christmas.
Many companies hire extra pairs of hands to wrap up Christmas presents.
This is a type of temporary job that not only companies hire though. Big families who don’t have time to wrap their presents before Christmas eve may be willing to pay a few pounds for help.
Maybe you’ll be able to find a few gigs like this on Google, but I recommend that you post on your social media as well.
Many people who weren’t actually looking for your services may see your post and become interested in your help.

7. Switch to cheaper car insurance
If you own a car but don’t drive it a lot, it might be cheaper to change your coverage to a usage-based or pay-per-mile insurance program.
These programs base part of their rates on how much you drive. Look up an insurer that offers this type of insurance in your area and switch it at the beginning of the year.
If you drive a lot, though, take a look at this article. It shares some tips you can apply to get a cheaper car insurance rate.
8. Blag discount on bills
Yeah, we can’t avoid bills. However, after New Year’s celebrations, some service providers also offer discounts for those interested in hiring their services.
You can call broadband and mobile phone companies to check if they are offering a better contract than the one you have with another company, for example.
Sometimes, even if your mobile phone contract isn’t over yet, it may be an excellent deal to swap.
9. Start a budget
If you don’t do it already, you need to start budgeting NOW!
I’m not kidding. Budgeting is probably the habit that has saved me more money in the long term.
Make this your New Year’s resolution and start budgeting in January 1st.
